Akelarre is a five-star hotel on Mount Igeldo above San Sebastian, built around the three-Michelin-star restaurant of chef Pedro Subijana. Its 22 rooms and suites, including two with private pools, look out over the Cantabrian Sea, and guests have a full-service spa, gym, bar and valet parking. The city centre is about ten minutes away by car, with Playa de la Concha five minutes off. It suits travellers coming mainly for the food and the views, who are happy to pay for both. At around $962 a night it is expensive, and being on the hill means walking into town is not practical.
