Baur au Lac is a five-star hotel in Zurich, open since 1844 and set in its own private park close to Bahnhofstrasse. Rooms look out over Lake Zurich and the Alps, and the interior combines traditional and modern styles. Guests get air conditioning, a gym, a restaurant with special diet menus, massage services, valet parking and pet-friendly rooms, and children are welcome. The hotel suits travellers who want a grand, quiet base in the city centre and are prepared to pay for it, with rates starting around $1,763 a night. One honest drawback: rooms facing the street can pick up traffic noise, so ask for a park-side room if quiet matters to you.
