Hotel Monte Rosa is a four-star property on Zermatt's main street, in the centre of the car-free village and about a five-minute walk from the train station. It is the oldest hotel in Zermatt, opened more than 160 years ago and originally built to serve mountaineers, among them Alpine Club members such as Edward Whymper. The building keeps a traditional chalet style, while rooms combine classic furnishings with modern touches such as air conditioning, minibars and free WiFi. Guests also have a restaurant, bar, sauna, solarium, spa area and swimming pool, and pets are welcome. Rates start around $504 a night, so it suits travellers wanting history and a central position rather than a budget stay. Rooms facing the street can carry some noise.
