Il Salviatino is a five-star hotel set in a restored 15th-century villa on the hills of Fiesole, about a fifteen-minute drive from the historic centre of Florence. Interiors combine 19th-century frescoes and antiques with modern comforts, and the property includes a spa, swimming pool, gym, restaurant and secure parking. Rooms are spacious and decorated individually, and pets and children are welcome. It suits travellers wanting a quiet, green hillside base with city views rather than a walkable downtown location, since reaching Florence means a short drive. Rates start at around $991 a night, so it is a considerable expense.
