Otahuna Lodge is a five-star country house hotel set on a 30-acre estate in Tai Tapu, around 20 to 30 minutes from Christchurch on New Zealand's South Island. Built in 1895 as the homestead of Canterbury pioneer Sir Heaton Rhodes, the Victorian mansion retains period woodwork, stained glass and heritage gardens, with views over the Canterbury Plains. There are seven individually themed suites, a swimming pool, fine dining with a restaurant open to non-residents, and membership of Relais & Châteaux. It suits travellers after a quiet, upscale rural stay rather than a city-base hotel, and rates start from $1,430 a night, so it is a considerable outlay.
