The Great Southern Hotel Melbourne is a large budget-to-mid-range hotel at 44 Spencer Street in Melbourne's CBD, directly opposite Southern Cross Station. It has 795 rooms and a 24-hour reception, so it handles a high volume of travellers, including rail arrivals and event-goers. Crown Casino, Melbourne Aquarium, the Exhibition and Convention Centre, Marvel Stadium and Victoria Harbour are all within easy reach on foot or by tram. Reviewers rate it around 8 out of 10, praising the staff, cleanliness and value, and free Wi-Fi and an on-site restaurant are available. It suits travellers who want a central base at a reasonable price rather than a quiet retreat; walls are reportedly thin, so light sleepers may hear corridor and street noise.
