Torre Zumeltzegi is a three-star boutique hotel set in a restored 13th-century fortified tower-house in the Old Town of Oñati, in Gipuzkoa, at Barrio Larraña 35. Rooms are spacious and clean, with original wooden beams, exposed stone walls and views over the Oñati Valley, the historic centre and the surrounding mountains. Guests get a garden, a bar, a restaurant serving traditional Basque cooking, room service and parking, and pets are welcome. The University of Sancti Spiritus is a short walk away. It suits travellers who want character and history rather than a modern city hotel, and it is a good base for exploring the Basque countryside. One weak point: the breakfast does not match the standard of the restaurant's other meals.
